The Ultimate BC Elopement Planning Guide

Imagine eloping in one of the most beautiful places in Canada, British Columbia. From wild coastlines and old-growth forests to alpine lakes and quiet mountain viewpoints, BC offers countless stunning backdrops for couples who want a celebration that feels intimate, meaningful, and completely their own. Planning an elopement here can be simple and stress-free, and that’s where I come in. I help guide you through the entire process, from choosing the perfect location and navigating permits to building a seamless timeline that lets you slow down, be present, and truly enjoy your day. Whether you’re dreaming of a quiet forest ceremony, a coastal adventure, or a mountaintop sunset, I’m here to support you every step of the way and bring your vision to life.

Why Elope in British Columbia?

  1. BC offers so much diversity from mountain tops, ocean views, islands, alpine lakes, and quaint towns.
  2. Offers ease and flexibility for elopements, by having so many easy and accessible locations.
  3. British Columbia is perfect for intimate/intentional eloping experiences.
  4. Offers year round options depending on what kind of vibe you are looking for.

How to Legally Elope in BC.

  1. You can get a marriage license at any of these three locations, Service BC, Municipal Hall, or an insurance agent. The cost for a marriage license is $100 and is issued immediately upon application, but remember to apply no more than three months before your wedding date, and apply in person.
  2. The legal requirements for eloping in BC are having an officiant, 2 witnesses and all of your paper work.
  3. Some simple symbolic ceremony ideas can create the most heartfelt moments on your elopement day. A private vow exchange allows you to speak your promises freely, without scripts or pressure, just the two of you sharing words that come straight from the heart. You could write letters to each other ahead of time and read them during your ceremony, turning that moment into something tender, personal, and deeply meaningful. Handfasting is another beautiful option, using a ribbon or piece of fabric to symbolize your lives being woven together as one. Even a quiet ring warming, holding your rings together and infusing them with your love and intention before you exchange them, adds a soft, symbolic touch. These small rituals create space for connection and emotion, making your elopement feel incredibly intimate and uniquely yours.

Best Locations to Elope in BC.

  1. Vancouver Island offers a variation of stunning locations: Tofino, Ucluelet, Sooke, Port Renfrew, Victoria, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Qualicum & Strathcona Park.
  2. The Incredible Mainland Mountains: Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, Golden, Revelstoke.
  3. Unique spots BC has to offer: Host-springs, helicopter-access to Alpine lakes, waterfalls, old-growth forests, and remote cabins.
  4. Seasonal picks: spring blooms, summer beaches, fall colors & winter elopements.

Understanding The Seasons in BC.

British Columbia offers an incredible variety of locations, from the wild beauty of Vancouver Island to the stunning landscapes across the mainland, but with that comes truly unpredictable weather. I always remind my couples that BC has a mind of its own: one day could bring a gentle snowfall, and the next might be bright, warm, and full of sunshine. Summer brings long, glowing light and gorgeous warmth, while the other seasons offer their own magic, golden fall colors, misty coastal mornings, or snow-kissed mountain peaks. No matter when or where you choose to elope, being prepared for anything nature brings makes the day feel even more relaxed and enjoyable.

Activities & Ideas.

  1. Hiking, Canoeing, or paddle boarding.
  2. A beach campfire (where permitted).
  3. Westfalia road-trip styled elopement.
  4. Helicopter Tours.
  5. Booking a cozy Air BNB, or cabin.
  6. Incorporating pets or a simple ritual.

What to Wear for a BC Elopement.

What you choose to wear for your elopement should reflect the vibe and energy you’re dreaming of, but I always encourage couples to go all in with their beautiful dress or suit. This is your day, and you deserve to feel incredible. If there’s a chance of rain, lighter, flowy fabrics tend to move beautifully without getting too heavy, and pairing your look with hiking boots can be both practical and stylish. Ultimately, choose something that feels like you and allows you to move comfortably while embracing the adventure.

When you’re eloping in the mountains, embracing the elements becomes part of the story, and layering up can keep you warm and cozy while still looking incredible. If rain rolls in, a clear umbrella not only keeps you dry but adds a dreamy, romantic touch to your photos. Leaning into whatever the weather brings makes your day feel more spontaneous, adventurous, and uniquely yours. When it comes to hair and makeup, choosing styles that work with the forecast can make all the difference. For example, if rain is possible, an elegant updo can hold beautifully, while letting your hair flow freely creates that wild, windswept magic. Humidity and mountain air can have a mind of their own, but with the right preparation, and a willingness to go with the moment can help you look stunning no matter what nature brings your way.
